Buyers Guides - Side Hinged Garage Doors

Traditional side hinged garage doors

Traditional side hinged garage doors open outwards. There are no operating mechanisms to take up your valuable garage space, however, the area in front of the doors must be kept clear of parked cars. Doors with side hinges are easy to open and close by hand and cannot be automated. Door stays are recommended to prevent the doors from blowing open, damaging the hinges or causing injury.

The majority of side hinged doors are made from solid timber or timber faced exterior plywood. This variety is typically supplied with a stained base coat or the choice of a full finish from a number of colour options. The finish will require maintenance to preserve weatherproofing and longevity. Timber naturally displays different grain patterns and colours, so it may be impossible to achieve an exact match between a pair of doors.

Some manufacturers offer windows with their side hinged installations while others also supply galvanised steel side hinged doors in a number of different finishes.

It is usually possible to find a pair of garage doors to meet most size requirements. You can achieve this by combining two standard singles or by ordering two bespoke singles.

If you are replacing old garage doors, it is advisable to fit new door frames when side-hinged doors are installed. This provides a solid framework for the new installation, promoting safe and easy operation.
