Buyers Guides - Retractable Garage Doors

'Up and over' garage doors are the most widely used type in the UK. They can be fitted with two kinds of lifting gear/mechanism - Canopy and Retractable.

Retractable Lifting Gear

Retractable Lifting Gear

Retractable lifting gear or operating mechanisms use horizontal tracks attached to the top of the door frame to guide the garage door during opening and closing. Vertical springs on each side of the door frame pull on lifting arms to generate a cantilever action. The door moves through an arc as it opens - out, up and over. It retracts almost fully into the garage space, leaving only a small part protruding out of the garage.

Retractable operated doors are widely available in most sizes. The cantilever action makes the door smooth to use and is excellent for manual or electric operation. This type of garage door is widely available in steel, timber and composite GRP and ABS materials. You can choose from a large range of styles, designs and finishes. Several manufacturers offer windows with their up and over garage doors.

Retractable operated mechanisms take up more space than canopy and therefore can be inappropriate in smaller garages. It is important to check that there is enough clear space for the horizontal runners and the lift arms. If it is a tight 'squeeze' to park your car, it may be worth considering the option of cranked lifting arms. These are designed to reduce intrusion at the height of your wing mirrors.

If you are replacing old garage doors, it is advisable to fit new door frames when the up and over garage doors are installed. This provides a solid framework for the new installation, promoting safe and easy operation.
