There are four main types of garage door: up & over, side hinged, roller and sectional. Only side hinged doors operate without lifting gear and cannot be automated with electric operators.
Up & Over garage doors open by moving out, up and over in an arc. They use Canopy or Retractable lifting gear. Canopy gear partially retracts the open door into the garage space, leaving part of the door exposed like a canopy. Retractable gear almost completely slides the door away into the garage space.
Side Hinged garage doors are modern versions of traditional outward opening doors. They open and close by hand and are supported by two or three hinges. There are GRP, steel or timber versions available.
Roller garage doors move vertically up and down in guides. The door curtain is constructed so it can roll up like a blind above the garage opening. Roller doors can be operated by hand, but are often fitted for electric operation. They are available in single 'skin' steel, or insulated double 'skin' aluminium.
Sectional garage doors are constructed in a number of hinged horizontal sections. Each section moves vertically as it opens, and then follows a curved section of track into the garage and along an overhead track. The whole door can be retracted fully into the garage, suspended under the ceiling. Sectional doors are usually fitted for electric operation, but can be operated manually.
