Electric operators for sectional doors function in the same way as up & over doors. The same manufacturer's kit can be used for either, but has to be programmed so it 'recognises' which type of door is being used. This is done using a menu displayed on the control box.
A boom is fixed above the garage opening, running back into the garage space. An electric motor and control box are mounted at the far end. The boom contains a drive chain or toothed belt that connects motor and door. The motor drives the chain or belt to open and close the door. The motor is supported by a ceiling bracket and is usually powered by mains electricity. Some manufacturers offer a rechargeable battery option.
A choice of motor/control units is available to manage garage doors of different size and weight. The controller optimises performance for a given type of door ensuring quieter closing and safer operation.
A handheld remote control device operates the motor by simple button presses. This is usually called a transmitter. Innovative digital keypads provide security code operation and futuristic finger scanning pads have also been introduced to control access.
Door curtains will reverse automatically if they touch an obstacle during closing. You can also install break beam photo cells behind the door aperture to detect anything that may be blocking the doorway. Specially encrypted security codes are changed automatically each time the transmitter is used.
