There are two types of roller door operators. One uses an electric motor in the spindle of the door roll mechanism, with a control box mounted beside it. The other uses an electric motor and control box mounted beside the door roll mechanism.
Most electric operators have to be purchased as options with new roller doors. Some premium roller doors are supplied with electric operators as standard. Most roller doors can be retro-fitted with operators.
A handheld remote control device operates the motor by simple button presses. This is usually called a transmitter. Optional digital keypads are available to enable security code operation and finger scanning pads have also been introduced to control access.
All electric operators have a manual override to open or close doors during a power failure. Some electric motors have a battery back-up that allows the door to remain automated for a limited number of operations.
Door curtains will reverse automatically if they touch an obstacle during closing. Optional beam break photo cells can be fitted behind the door aperture to detect vehicles, people or bicycles in the way. Encrypted security codes automatically change each time the transmitter is operated.
