All retractable up & over garage doors can be automated with an electric operator. Some canopy gear types can also be automated.
The most common type of operator uses a horizontal track called a boom. It is centrally mounted on the top frame of the garage door aperture. The boom runs back into the garage space with an electric motor and control box at the far end. It contains a drive chain or toothed belt that connects the motor and door. The motor drives the chain or belt to open and close the door. A drive belt operates more quietly than a chain. The motor is supported by a ceiling bracket and is usually powered by mains electricity.
A choice of control units is available to manage many different sizes and weights of doors. The controller optimises performance for a given type of door ensuring quieter closing and safer operation.
A handheld remote device, usually known as a transmitter can be used to operate the motor by straightforward button presses. Digital keypads are available to enable security code operation and advanced finger scanning pads are a high-tech method of controlling access.
Electric operators have a number of built-in safety and security features. The operator will automatically reverse if the door encounters an obstacle as it descends. The drive mechanism usually has an automatic latch that prevents a closed door from being levered open by force. Beam break photo cells can be fitted on the frame to detect vehicles, people or bicycles in the way of the door. These prevent the door closing until the obstacle is moved.
